Speculate

The Speculate Collective has evolved out of a decades-long working relationship between Christina Kelly & Aislinn Weidele. Working both adjacent and collaboratively, we use narrative forms to explore imagined histories, often borrowing from speculative and genre fiction tropes. Throughout, humor is wielded to investigate topics that range from the psychology of relationships (CK pls find right words) to climate anxiety.

Speculate is the collective started by Christina Kelly & Aislinn Weidele. For over 20 years the artists have been friends and sometimes collaborators.  Recently working independently in different boroughs (Bronx & Brooklyn) and meeting for studio visits over zoom they discovered many areas of cross-over in their work – notably a love of narrative, speculation, rabbits, and a fascination with wilderness.

Christina’s works include films, stories, installations and zines covering the history of office plants, the (imagined) psychoanalysis of childrens book author Margaret Wise Brown, and an investigation into a unique tombstone in Green-Wood cemetery.

Aislinn uses printmaking, photography and drawing to tell stories of environmental concerns. Rooted in narrative, the images can be singular but are usually part of a larger story which are published as a pamphlet or as a web-based experience.
